In a large skillet or a wok, stir fry beef strips in hot oil over high heat for 2 minutes.
Add garlic, onion, and spices and cook for 2 minutes longer, until beef is no longer pink.
Drain and then return to pan.

Add mushrooms and green pepper and cook for 5 minutes.

Remove from heat.
Beat in sugar.
Add eggs, beat until bubbles form (this step is really important-keep beating until you get bubbles).
Add vanilla.
Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt.
Spread in a greased 8x8-inch pan.
Bake for 30-35 minutes at 350\u00b0F.
Options: add some yogurt or applesauce for moister brownies. Stir in some chocolate chips and/or raisins (soak the raisins in water and drain, before adding) at the end.

Sift flour and salt; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.
(In Cuisinart, mix first 3 ingredients, then add the rest.)

Turn out on floured board; roll to fit pie pan.
