For the Coney Island Chili Dog, brown the ground

Brown ground beef in a skillet, adding onions halfway through. Add minced garlic when meat is nearly done.
Add remaining ingredients; stir well to combine. Simmer over low heat 15 minutes.
Serve over hot dogs, Coney Island style! Top with shredded sharp cheddar if desired.

Coney Island Sauce For "Gaggers" ( Hot Dogs)

Place the hamburger and onion a heavy skillet and brown. Add water and remaining ingredients.
Stir mixture and bring it to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes stirring occasionally.
The finished consistency should be more on the thicker side not thin.
Add a boiled hot dog (I like the cheap ones) to a steamed bun, (I like the New England hot dog rolls) add mustard, coney island sauce, chopped onions and a sprinkle of celery salt and ENJOY!

Coney Island Sauce

Brown beef, onions, and garlic in large skillet.
Stir in remaining ingredients.
Simmer, uncovered 10-15 minutes.
Spoon sauce over cooked hot dogs (in buns) with any (or all!) of your other favorite hot dog toppings (sauerkraut, chopped onion, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, melted American or cheddar cheese).

In a 4 quart sauce pan brown diced chuck steak in vegetable oil, stir steak frequently until lightly brown.
Add beef broth and water.
Simmer beef mixture for 1 hour on medium low heat. After beef has been simmering for 1 hour, add 2 cups of tomatoes that have been processed in a blender with their juice. Strain after processing to remove seeds and pulp.
Add all spices to meat and tomatoes and stir well. Simmer for forty five to fifty minutes on low heat, stirring from time to time.

Cook meat and onion until red is out of meat.
Add salt and pepper, tomato sauce and chili powder; simmer 10 minutes.
This recipe can be cut in half for a smaller amount.

Flint Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce

DO NOT brown ground beef before using. Combine ALL ingredients except hot dogs in a pot and simmer until thickened. Stir occasionally to ensure beef does not clump and cooks evenly.
Grind the hot dogs very fine (or chop fine in food processor) stir into beef mixture and cook 15 minutes longer.
Use over GOOD natural casing hot dogs (Koegel Vienna if possible) with chopped onion and mustard. The big secret in this recipe is the ground hot dogs. (Hint: Back home, I still used the Koegels' in the sauce, just the skinless ones).

Coney Island Sauce

Cook the onions in butter until soft and translucent.
Stir in hamburger, salt, paprika and chili powder. Cook this over medium beat until browned.

When the chuck is no longer pink add the hot dog mixture and the tomato sauce.and simmer for about 30 minutes. You might not need to use all of the tomato sauce. I use the tomato sauce so the coney sauce doesnt become crumbly.

Alabama Coney-Style Hot Dogs

In a skillet over med-high heat, brown the beef with the onion.
As the mixture browns, break up the beef with a fork.
Pour off the fat and add all remaining sauce ingredients, mixing well.
Simmer over low heat, partially covered and stirring frequently for 1 hour, or until mixture thickens.
If desired, add an additional tablespoon of cider vinegar the last 15 minutes of cooking.
Place hot dogs in buns and top with mustard, onion, coleslaw or sauerkraut, and Alabama Coney sauce.
Serve immediately.
