Ingredients

1/4 c. butter or margarine, softened
1/4 c. brown sugar, packed
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. shortening
1 egg, separated
1 c. all-purpose flour
3/4 c. finely chopped nuts
jelly or tinted confectioners sugar icing
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Preparation

Heat oven to 350\u00b0.
Mix thoroughly butter, shortening, sugar, egg yolk and vanilla.
Work in flour and salt until dough holds together.
Shape dough by teaspoonful into 1-inch ball.
Beat egg white.
Slightly dip each ball into egg white and roll in nuts. Place one inch apart on ungreased baking sheet; press thumbprint deeply into each.
Bake approximately 10 minutes or until slightly brown.
Immediately remove from baking sheet; cool and fill with jelly or icing.
