Ingredients

1 c. butter or other shortening
2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
3 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. soda
1 c. chopped nuts (optional)
Preparation

Cream the butter and sugar.
Add eggs and vanilla.
Beat. Sift dry ingredients together and stir into creamed mixture. Add nuts. Form dough into rolls 1 1/2-inches in diameter and wrap in waxed paper.
Chill in refrigerator.
Cut dough into slices and arrange on cookie sheet. Bake at 375\u00b0 for 10 to 12 minutes.
Makes 4 1/2 dozen.
