Crackling Bread - cooking recipe

1 c. plain flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. soda
2 Tbsp. sugar
3/4 c. plain cornmeal
1/2 c. bran
1 egg
1 1/2 c. buttermilk
4 Tbsp. melted shortening
1 1/2 c. chopped cracklings
Preparation

Sift flour, baking powder, salt, soda and sugar together and mix with cornmeal and bran.
Beat egg well; add milk and combine with dry ingredients, stirring only until flour disappears.
Add shortening and cracklings.
Bake in greased pan in moderate oven (400\u00b0) for about 40 minutes.
Serve hot with butter.
