Ingredients

2 1/2 c. regular flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. each: nutmeg and cloves
3/4 c. soft shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/3 c. buttermilk
1 c. raisins (optional)
1/2 c. chopped walnuts (optional)
1 1/2 c. rolled oats (quick or regular)
Preparation

Sift together the flour, soda, salt and spices.
Cream the shortening and sugars.
Beat in eggs and vanilla.
Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk.
Stir in raisins, walnuts and rolled oats.
