Cherry Shortbread Cookies - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/4 c. flour
    1/2 c. butter
    1/2 c. chopped maraschino cherries, well drained
    2 to 3 drops red food coloring (optional)
    3 Tbsp. sugar
    1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Preparation
    Stir together flour, sugar and nutmeg in a mixing bowl.
    Cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
    Mix in cherries and food coloring.
    Form mixture into a bowl and knead until smooth.
    Shape dough into 1 inch balls.
    Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
    Using the bottom of a glass, slightly flatten balls to 1/2 inch.
    Bake at 325\u00b0 for 20 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are lightly browned.
    Remove and cool cookies on a wire rack.
    Yields 2 dozen.
