Ingredients

1 c. sugar
1 heaping tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. salt
1 c. molasses
4 tsp. soda, dissolved in 2/3 c. hot water
3 tsp. vanilla
5 c. flour
1 c. melted shortening
Preparation

Mix all ingredients in order, being sure that the shortening is added last.
Chill dough in refrigerator.
Roll 1/2 teaspoon of dough in your hand into a small ball, then roll in granulated sugar.
Bake on greased sheet in 350\u00b0 oven for 12 to 15 minutes.
