Bishop Bread - cooking recipe
Ingredients

1 1/2 c. cut up dates
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 Tbsp. soft shortening
1 egg
2 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. black walnuts
1 pkg. chocolate chips (6 oz.)
18 maraschino cherries, cut in pieces
Preparation

Pour 1 1/2 cups boiling water over 1 1/2 cups dates and cool. Mix brown sugar, shortening and 1 egg.
Stir this into the date and water mixture and mix well.
Sift flour, soda and salt together and add to date mixture.
Add walnuts, chocolate chips and cherries.
Batter will be very stiff.
Put in regular size loaf pan and let stand 20 minutes before baking about an hour at 350\u00b0.
Other nuts may be used but black walnuts give it a very distinctive taste.
Makes a wonderful Christmas treat.
