Ingredients

3/4 c. finely chopped nuts
1/4 c. soft shortening
1/4 c. soft butter
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 egg white
Preparation

Prepare finely chopped nuts. Mix nuts, shortening, butter, brown sugar, egg yolk and vanilla thoroughly.
Stir in flour and baking powder (sifted together).
Roll in balls the size of a walnut.
Beat egg white slightly and dip and roll balls in the finely chopped nuts.
Place 1-inch apart on greased baking sheet. Bake 5 minutes at 375\u00b0.
Press thumb into top of each cookie. Return to oven for 8 minutes longer.
When cool, fill with jelly, tinted frosting or a red cherry.
Makes 24 cookies.
