Ingredients

1 c. molasses
1 c. sugar
1 c. melted shortening
1 egg, slightly beaten
4 tsp. soda
2 tsp. vanilla
5 3/4 c. sifted flour
1 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
2/3 c. hot water
Preparation

Combine sugar and melted shortening in mixing bowl; mix well. Add molasses and vanilla.
Mix egg in mixture.
Have ready the flour, mixed and sifted with salt, cream of tartar and spices. Dissolve the soda in hot water; add to molasses mixture.
Mix well.
Add sifted ingredients all at once.
Stir to thoroughly mix.
Cover the bowl; refrigerate overnight or longer to make rolling easy.
When ready to bake on lightly greased cookie sheet, roll a portion of the dough and cut with a 3 or 3 1/2-inch cookie cutter.
Place 2 inches apart.
Bake at 400\u00b0 for about 9 to 10 minutes.
Remove immediately when baked.
