Orange Bread - cooking recipe

1 c. orange peel, chopped or grated
2/3 c. hot water
1 c. white sugar
2 Tbsp. shortening
1/2 c. white sugar
1 egg
4 c. flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. baking soda
Preparation

Cook peel, water and 1 cup white sugar until peel is soft. Strain, reserving liquid.
Cook liquid and add enough milk to liquid to make 2 cups.
Mix remaining dry ingredients.
Add egg and cooled milk/liquid.
Stir well and fold in peel.
Pour into greased pans and let stand for 20 minutes.
Bake at 275\u00b0 for 1 hour or until tester comes out clean.
(Fill loaf pans 2/3 full.)
