Grandmother'S Irish Soda Bread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 c. sifted flour
    1/4 c. sugar
    1 tsp. salt
    1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1/3 c. shortening
    1 1/3 c. buttermilk
    1 egg
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 Tbsp. caraway seed
    1 c. raisins
Preparation
    In a bowl, sift the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder.
    Mix in caraway seed.
    With a pastry blender or knife, cut in shortening to the consistency of cornmeal.
    Add raisins.
    Stir in combined buttermilk, egg and soda.
    Mix until just moistened. Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead gently until smooth. Form a round loaf.
    Place dough in a well-greased pan.
    Cut a cross about 1/2 inch deep.
    Bake until golden at 375\u00b0, 1 hour or longer.
    Smother the outside of the loaf with butter or margarine while still hot to give it extra flavor.
    Yield:
    1 round loaf.
