Ingredients

1/2 c. oleo
3/4 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1/2 c. molasses (dark)
1 tsp. anise flavoring
3 1/3 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
Preparation

Heat oven to 350\u00b0.
Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, molasses and anise.
Blend dry ingredients; mix in gradually with hands.
If dough seems too soft, refrigerate until firm.
Mold into balls 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch in diameter.
Place on greased baking sheet. Bake about 12 minutes or until golden brown on the bottom. Cookies harden on standing.
Store in airtight container with slice of apple to mellow them.
Yields about 4 dozen.
