Ingredients

3/4 c. soft shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. molasses
2 1/4 to 2 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
Preparation

Mix together thoroughly first four ingredients.
Sift rest of ingredients together and stir in first mixture gradually.
Chill dough.
Roll into balls sized like large walnuts and flatten slightly.
Dip tops into cold water, then into sugar.
Place, sugared side up, 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 375\u00b0 for 10 to 12 minutes, until set but not hard.
Cool and store in covered container.
