Ingredients

1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter or margarine, softened
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. sifted powdered sugar
1 large egg
1 1/2 tsp. instant coffee granules
1 1/2 tsp. water
2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. cocoa
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. milk chocolate morsels
2/3 c. chopped pecans or walnuts

Preparation

Beat shortening and butter in a large mixing bowl at medium speed of an electric mixer until fluffy.
Gradually add 1/2 cup sugar and powdered sugar, beating well.
Add egg, beating well. Dissolve coffee granules in water; add to creamed mixture, beating well.
Combine flour and next 4 ingredients; gradually add to creamed mixture, beating well.
Stir in chocolate morsels and pecans.
Cover and chill 1 hour.
Shape into 1/2-inch balls; roll in additional sugar.
Place on lightly greased cookie sheets. Press with a fork to flatten.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
Cool on wire racks.
Yield:
6 1/2 dozen.
