Ingredients

1 c. powdered sugar
1/2 c. margarine
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond or peppermint extract
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. red food coloring
extra sugar or sprinkles
Preparation

Heat oven to 375\u00b0.
Mix first 6 ingredients, then stir in flour and salt.
Divide in half; tint one half with food coloring.
For each candy cane, shape 1 teaspoon of dough into 4-inch roll.
Roll back and forth on a lightly floured board.
Place one red strip next to a white strip side by side.
Press together lightly and twist.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Curve top down to form handle of cane.
Bake 8 to 9 minutes.
Cute with sprinkles!
