Ingredients

1 c. molasses
1 c. sugar
1 c. melted shortening
1 egg
2/3 c. boiling water
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cloves
4 level tsp. soda
1 heaping tsp. cream of tartar
flour
Preparation

Combine molasses, sugar and shortening.
Add egg.
Add boiling water.
Add all spices, soda and cream of tartar.
Add just enough flour to make a stiff dough (4 to 5 cups), 1 cup at a time (or less).
Chill, covered, for 2 or 3 hours or overnight.
