Ingredients

1/2 c. soft margarine
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 c. finely chopped nuts (optional)
Preparation

Mix together thoroughly the margarine, brown sugar, egg yolk and vanilla.
Sift flour and salt into mixture; mix well.
Roll into 1-inch balls; dip in slightly beaten egg white.
Roll into nuts (optional).
Place about 1 inch apart on cookie sheet with parchment paper on it.
Bake at 375\u00b0 for 5 minutes.
Remove from oven; quickly press thumb* gently on top of each cookie.
Return to oven and bake 8 minutes longer.
After cooled, place jelly or icing in the thumbprints.
