Ingredients

1 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1 Tbsp. water
2/3 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. flour
1/3 c. cocoa
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. soda
2 c. (12 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 c. chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Preparation

Cream shortening, sugar, water and vanilla.
Beat in eggs. Combine flour, cocoa, salt and soda; gradually add to creamed mixture and beat until blended.
Stir in chocolate chips and nuts if desired.
Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Bake at 375\u00b0 for 7 to 9 minutes.
Do not overbake.
Cool 2 minutes before removing.
Yields 3 dozen.
