Ingredients

1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. buttermilk
1 3/4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 c. cut-up dates
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped pecans
1 c. candied cherries, quartered
Preparation

Mix thoroughly shortening, brown sugar and egg.
Stir in buttermilk.
Sift together the flour, soda and salt; stir in mixture.
Stir and mix in pecans, cherries and dates.
Mix all together and chill.
Heat oven to 400\u00b0.
Drop by teaspoonful 2-inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet.
Top with pecan half or half candied cherries.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes.
Makes 4 dozen cookies.
