Ingredients

1/4 c. brown sugar
1 c. flour
1/4 c. shortening
1/4 tsp. salt
jelly
1/4 c. softened butter
3/4 c. chopped nuts
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg, separated
Preparation

Mix brown sugar, shortening, butter, egg yolk and vanilla in large bowl.
Mix in flour and salt to form dough.
Shape into 1-inch balls.
Beat egg white slightly.
Dip dough in whites, then cover with nuts.
Place on cookie sheet, 1 inch apart.
Press thumb deeply into center of each.
Bake 8 to 9 minutes at 350\u00b0.
After cookies cool, fill center with jelly.
