Ingredients

3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. Brer Rabbit molasses or sorghum
1 egg
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
Preparation

Melt shortening over low heat; cool.
Add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well.
Sift dry ingredients together; add to first mixture and mix well.
Chill.
Then roll into 1-inch balls; place on a greased cookie sheet 2 inches apart.
Bake at 375\u00b0 for 8 to 10 minutes (8 for chewy, 10 for crispy).
Remove from cookie sheet; place on wire rack to cool.
Store in airtight container.
