Date Nut Bread(Julia Veach'S) - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. finely chopped dates
    1 c. boiling water
    1 tsp. soda
    1 c. brown sugar
    1 egg, well beaten
    1 Tbsp. shortening
    2 c. flour
    1 c. chopped pecans
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Mix sifted soda with chopped dates; pour boiling water over this mixture.
    Allow to stand until water cools.
    Cream sugar and shortening.
    Add eggs, salt and vanilla.
    Combine with date mixture.
    Stir in flour and nuts, which have been dredged in flour.
