Ingredients

1 1/2 sticks butter
1/4 c. white sugar or 9 tsp. xxxx sugar
1 c. black walnuts or blanched almonds
2 tsp. cold water
2 c. flour (plain), sifted
2 tsp. vanilla
dash of salt
Preparation

Cream sugar and butter well.
Add vanilla; grind the nuts and add to this.
Add the cold water, then the flour and salt.
Knead thoroughly.
Roll small amount at a time by hand in a roll the size of your finger, cut in pieces about an inch long.
Cook in preheated oven at 300\u00b0.
Cook until light brown, about half an hour, depending on your oven.
When cool, dust cookies with powdered sugar.
Make only one batch at a time.
When cool, store in a tight can lined with wax paper.
These keep a long time and the flavor improves with age.
