Ingredients

3/4 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. ginger
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon

Preparation

Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses thoroughly with an electric mixer.
Sift flour, soda, salt, cloves, cinnamon and ginger together.
Mix dry ingredients into egg mixture.
Chill. Roll into 1 1/4-inch balls.
Dip tops of dough balls in sugar. Place balls, sugared side up, 3-inches apart, on greased baking sheet.
Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until set, but not hard.
