Pour hot water over bread crumbs.
Add first mixture to bread crumbs, then stir in salt and vanilla.
Pour in buttered baking dish and set in pan of hot water.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 30 minutes.
Remove and cover with meringue made by folding the stiffly beaten egg whites with two teaspoons of sugar.
