Bring to a full rolling boil and boil hard one minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, skim off foam with metal spoon and pour quickly into glasses.
Cover at once with 1/8-inch hot paraffin.
Allow several days to set.

Let cool.
Cream together the shortening (or margarine) and sugar.
Add eggs and beat until mixture is fluffy. Sift together brown sugar, flour, salt, soda and cinnamon and add to the creamed mixture.
Stir in Dr. Pepper mixture and vanilla. Pour into a greased and floured 9 x 13 x 2-inch pan.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 40 to 45 minutes or until done. Remove from oven and spread topping over cake.
