Dissolve baking soda in the 1/4 cup of hot water.
Add baking soda, water and milk to shortening and sugar; mix.
Add all other dry ingredients and mix well.
By hand, add nuts and raisins.
Grease and flour 2 bread pans.
Bake 45 minutes.
Recipe makes 2 large loafs.
