Ingredients

3/4 c. shortening
1 c. dark brown sugar
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. plus 2 Tbsp. molasses
1 egg
2 c. sifted flour
Preparation

Melt shortening in a 3 or 4-quart saucepan.
Remove from heat and let cool.
Sift baking soda, spices, salt and flour together. Add sugar, molasses and egg to cooled shortening and beat well. Stir in flour, forming a stiff dough.
Chill thoroughly before forming into 1-inch balls.
Preheat oven to 375\u00b0.
Roll cookies in granulated sugar and place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheets.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes.
Makes about 50.
