Kissing Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. hot water
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 c. sugar
    4 eggs, beaten
    1 c. pecan halves
    1/2 lb. dates, chopped
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 tsp. vanilla
    2 1/2 c. flour
    1/2 lb. chocolate kisses
Preparation
    Mix together hot water, dates and baking soda.
    Let stand until cool.
    Cream together shortening and sugar.
    Add vanilla and eggs.
    Mix well.
    Add flour.
    Mix thoroughly.
    Add date mixture. Spoon half batter into a greased angel food pan.
    Top with half of the nuts and kisses.
    Add the rest of the batter.
    Add remaining nuts.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 1 hour.
    Increase heat to 375\u00b0 for 15 minutes longer.
