Broccoli Cheese Soup - cooking recipe

1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen broccoli spears
1/2 c. margarine
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 1/2 c. chicken broth
1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. milk
1 c. grated American cheese
Preparation

Cook broccoli according to package directions; drain on paper towels and cut into small pieces. Melt margarine in large saucepan over medium heat.
Stir in flour, salt and pepper, mixing well. Add milk, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens.
Add broth; reduce to low heat and stir in cheese.
When cheese has melted, add broccoli and mix thoroughly.
You may also add cooked diced potatoes, carrots and green peas (about 1 cup each) for variety.
