Bantry Brown Bread - cooking recipe

1 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 c. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 c. whole wheat flour
1/4 c. currants
1/4 c. vegetable shortening
1 1/4 c. buttermilk
2 Tbsp. sugar
1 Tbsp. water
Preparation

In large bowl, combine all-purpose and whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt.
Cut in shortening and buttermilk.
Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead for 10 minutes.
Shape into a 7-inch round loaf.
Cut a cross on top of dough with a sharp knife.
Bake at 375\u00b0 in a preheated oven for 40 minutes.
Remove from oven.
Combine 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
Brush top of bread with sugar syrup and bake 5 minutes longer.
