Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    6 qt. cucumbers
    6 medium onions, sliced
    1 c. salt
    5 c. vinegar
    6 c. sugar
    1 tsp. turmeric
    4 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1 tsp. celery seed
    1/8 tsp. red pepper
Preparation
    Wash cucumbers.
    Slice in 1/8-inch slices; combine with sliced onions and salt.
    Let stand for 3 hours.
    Drain well, rinse thoroughly and drain again.
    In a pot, combine vinegar, sugar, turmeric, mustard seed, celery seed and red pepper; bring to a boil.
    Add cucumbers and onions; heat just to simmering.
    Do not boil!
    Pack in sterilized jars; seal at once.
    Makes 7 to 9 jars.
