    4 to 6 lamb shanks (about 3/4 lb. each), fat trimmed off
    olive oil
    2 medium onions, sliced
    1 tsp. ground allspice
    1/2 tsp. nutmeg
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. pepper
    3 c. chopped canned tomatoes
