Heritage Caramel Frosting - cooking recipe

4 1/2 c. sugar, divided
1 1/2 c. milk
3/4 c. butter or margarine, softened
Preparation

Combine 3 cups of sugar and milk in a large saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside.
