Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    16 lb. whole cucumbers
    salt
    alum
    1 gal. vinegar
    10 lb. sugar
    1/2 box spice
Preparation
    Put cucumbers in churn with about 2 cups salt to 1 gallon water until egg floats.
    Let set 7 days.
    Take out of churn and wash well.
    Cut up.
    Put 4 tablespoons alum to 1 gallon water and pour over cut up cucumbers.
    Let set overnight and wash well.
    Put back in churn.
    Pour 1 gallon vinegar over them and let set 6 hours. Pour vinegar off and throw away.
    Put sugar and spice in layers. Let set 2 days.
    Do not seal.
    When adding spice, put in a thin cloth.
    Use 5% vinegar (Heinz).
