West Haven Cake - cooking recipe

1 pkg. dates, cut in half
1 c. hot water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1/4 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. cocoa
1/2 c. nut meats (whole)
1 cake sweet milk chocolate, cut in pieces
Preparation

Cut the dates in half and pour the hot water over them with the baking soda and let cool. Cream the sugar and shortening. Add dates to creamed mixture and salt if butter is not used.
Add the eggs, vanilla and flour, sifted with cocoa.
Pour in a 9 x 13-inch pan and sprinkle the nut meats and chocolate over the dough in pan.
Bake 40 minutes in moderate oven. Serve with whipped cream.
