Fig Preserves - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    7 c. sugar
    4 c. water
    4 1/2 lb. figs
    1/4 c. soda
Preparation
    Put figs in pan with the soda.
    Cover figs with boiling water. Let stand for 5 minutes.
    Pour off soda water and rinse with cold water several times.
    Boil sugar and water; add figs and cook until figs are transparent.
    Place in sterilized jars and seal.
