Mary Todd Lincoln'S Election Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. currants or raisins
    1/2 c. brandy
    1 Tbsp. sugar
    3/4 c. scalded milk
    1 cake yeast
    1/4 c. water
    1 c. flour
    1/4 lb. butter
    1 c. sugar
    2 3/4 c. flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    3/4 tsp. mace
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1 egg
    1 tsp. grated lemon rind
    2 tsp. lemon juice
Preparation
    Soak the currants or raisins in 1/2 cup brandy overnight in a tightly closed jar.
    Add 1 tablespoon sugar to the scalded milk; cool.
    Dissolve the yeast cake in 1/4 cup water; add to milk.
    Add 1 cup flour; beat until well blended.
    Let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
