1 c. shortening
1/2 c. dark brown sugar, packed
1/2 c. granulated sugar
2 eggs, separated
1 Tbsp. cold water
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. dark brown sugar, packed
6 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
Preparation

Preheat oven to 375\u00b0.
Cream shortening and add sugars, blending until light.
Beat in egg yolks to which the cold water has been added.
Add vanilla.
Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt and add gradually, beating after each addition.
Pat the dough into a 17 x 11-inch pan.
Beat egg whites until stiff.
Add 1 cup brown sugar gradually and beat until meringue is stiff and glossy.
Stir in chocolate chips and spread topping over the dough.
Bake 30 minutes.
Allow to stand 1 hour before cutting into squares.
