Split Pea And Barley Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 1/2 c. water
    1 1/2 c. (10 oz.) dried split peas, rinsed and drained
    1/2 c. barley
    1 large carrot, diced
    1 tsp. garlic, minced
    1/2 c. chopped onion
    1 large stalk celery, diced
    1/4 tsp. thyme
    1/4 tsp. pepper
    5 c. chicken broth
Preparation
    Put all ingredients in a 3 to 4-quart pot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, one hour, until peas begin to fall apart and vegetables are cooked tender.
