Ingredients

3/4 c. melted shortening
1 c. molasses or sorghum
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. buttermilk
5 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. ginger
3 tsp. baking soda
1 Tbsp. lemon or vanilla extract
Preparation

Mix melted shortening, molasses and sugar until smooth.
Add buttermilk and sifted flour, salt, ginger and soda.
Add extract. Mix to a smooth, stiff dough and chill until firm.
Roll out on lightly floured surface.
Place on greased baking sheet and bake 10 minutes in a 350\u00b0 oven.
