Tarheel Hush Puppies - cooking recipe

Ingredients

2 c. self-rising corn meal mix
1 egg
1/3 c. chopped onion
1 c. buttermilk (2 Tbsp. vinegar plus sweet milk to equal 1 c.)

Preparation

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly.
Drop by spoonfuls into deep hot fat heated to 375\u00b0 (preferably that used for frying fish).
Hush puppies will rise to top and may be turned once for even browning.
When golden brown, remove to paper towel to drain excess fat.
