Apple Dumplings - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    1 1/2 c. water
    1/4 tsp. cinnamon
    1/4 tsp. nutmeg
    6 to 10 drops red food coloring
    3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
    2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. salt
    2/3 c. shortening
    1/2 c. milk
    6 medium whole apples, pared and cored
Preparation
    Combine sugar, water, spices and food coloring; bring to a boil.
    Remove from heat.
    Add butter.
    Sift together dry ingredients; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    Add milk all at once and stir just until flour is moistened.
