Preacher Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    15 cucumbers (3 or 4 inches long)
    1 tsp. alum
    4 c. cider vinegar
    8 c. white sugar
    1 stick cinnamon
    2 tsp. mixed spices
    5 tsp. salt (not iodized)
Preparation
    Put the cucumbers in stone jar.
    Pour boiling water over for 3 days (change).
    Put alum over cukes on the fourth day and cover with boiling water.
    Wash on fifth day and cut up in 1/2 inch or thicker slices and put back in jar.
    Bring the vinegar, sugar, cinnamon, mixed spices and salt to a boil and pour over the cukes in the jar.
    Makes 4 gallon jars - 1/2 bushel.
