Italian Cream Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. sugar
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 stick margarine
    5 eggs, separated
    1 c. buttermilk
    1 tsp. soda
    2 c. flour
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. chopped nuts
    1 c. coconut
Preparation
    Mix buttermilk and soda in measuring cup; set aside.
    Beat the 5 egg whites until stiff.
    Cream shortenings and sugar.
    Beat in egg yolks.
    Add buttermilk alternately with flour.
    Fold in egg whites, vanilla, nuts and coconut.
    Spoon into well-greased and floured 9-inch round pans.
    Bake at 325\u00b0 for 30 minutes.
    Cool and frost.
