Beef Stew Bourbonnais - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 lb. beef chuck
    1 Tbsp. shortening
    1 clove minced garlic
    1 small chopped onion
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/8 tsp. pepper
    1 can tomato soup
    3/4 c. red wine
    1/4 c. water
    1/4 tsp. powdered basil
    1/4 tsp. powdered thyme
    1/2 c. ketchup
    3 medium carrots
    1 1/2 c. cut celery
    4 medium potatoes
Preparation
    Cut vegetables diagonally.
    Cut beef into cubes and brown slightly.
    Add garlic and onion and saute.
    Use salt and pepper. Stir in soup (undiluted), wine and water.
    Cover and simmer 30 minutes.
    Add herbs and ketchup.
    Arrange vegetables on top of meat and gravy.
    Cover.
    Simmer 1 1/2 hours or until meat and vegetables are tender.
    Add more water if needed.
    Half cup lemon juice may be substituted for wine.
    Increase water from 1/4 cup to 3/4 cup.
