Icicle (14 Day) Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. pickling salt
    1 gal. cucumbers, sliced or quartered
    1 Tbsp. alum
    1 qt. hot vinegar (5% acidity)
    4 pt. sugar
    spices (optional)
Preparation
    Wash cucumbers and slice (approximately 1/4-inch).
    Place in a jug.
    Dissolve salt in 1/2 gallon boiling water; pour over cucumbers.
    Let sit 7 days.
    (Remove scum if forms.) Cover with a thin cloth.
