Homemade Paste - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 Tbsp. flour
    2 Tbsp. sugar
    2 Tbsp. powdered alum
    1 pt. cold water
    5 drops oil of cloves
Preparation
    Mix flour, sugar and alum together.
    Add a small amount of the pint of cold water and stir well to make a paste, to prevent lumps in the finished paste.
    Heat the remainder of the water to boiling point in a 2 qt. pan.
    While stirring, slowly add the paste to the boiling water.
    Cook until thick, stirring.
    Paste will be thicker when cold.
    Stir in oil of cloves.
    Pour into a small bowl and cover with one thickness of cloth to prevent crusting.
    When cold, put into sterilized jars with tight fitting lids.
